1 of only 96 Ever Produced. The only Mustang 'E' known to still exist today. Fully Documented and in Excellent Condition!
The 1969 Mustang 'E' is a very rare limited-production fastback that rolled off Ford's assembly line on November 21, 1968 at their Dearborn, Michigan facility (the only manufacturing plant where Mustang 'E' models were produced). Equipped with a specially designed inline 6-cylinder, the Mustang 'E' featured a unique set of specifications - none of which applied to any of the other 6-cylinder Mustangs that Ford made. This includes the following:
Special Factory Drivetrain:
- 4.1L 250ci motor (do not confuse with "4.1L Special")
- Increased 9.0:1 compression ratio
- Specially designed Autolite carburetor
- 3-Speed C4 Automatic Transmission
- Mustang Shifter with Kickdown and Neutral Switch
- Oversized Torque Converter (approx. 1-inch larger)
- 2.33:1 rear axle ratio
Special Factory Cooling System:
- Specialty 13 Fins-per-Inch RadiatorS
- 6-Blade Cooling Fan (17-inch diameter)
- Specialty 13 Fins-per-Inch Radiator
- 196 - 203 Degree Thermostat
- Air Conditioning Delete (all Mustang 'E' models)
(Details on these special design characteristics can be seen on the spec sheets in the images below. Attributes are highlighted in red.)
Why Ford Designed And Produced The Mustang 'E'
Ford's purpose for the vehicle was to be an economy model (hence the 'E' designation) intended for use in the Mobilgas Economy Run. This was a popular historic event held up until 1969 where automakers competed to see which vehicles could achieve the best fuel economy on a real-life, long distance drive starting in California and heading east.
Producing only 96 Mustang 'E' models allowed it to be counted as an official production-level automobile, allowing it to meet the requirements for the MobilGas Economy Run (no prototypes or one-of-a-kind vehicles were permitted). In other words, Ford began official production to not only compete in the Economy Run, but to begin testing, creating and reaching a new market of fuel-conscious consumers by using the already successful Mustang Platform. This was a very notable and remarkable aspect of Ford's history, especially since horsepower and speed are what fueled the Mustang market during the time.
Now, in 2023 there is only a single remaining specimen known to exist. It has undergone a complete restoration to MCA (Mustang Club of America) specifications and is in concours condition. In its original color of luxurious Silver Jade with beautiful black interior, this is without a doubt one of the rarest Fastbacks on the planet.
Restored over a period of several years, thanks to the direct help of Ford Motor Company who provided historical records, specifications, and other important documentation. This enabled the restoration to match all specifications just as it came from the assembly line at Dearborn in 1968.
