The SS L79 refers to a high-performance Chevrolet Nova SS (Super Sport) with optional L79 V8 engine. It was designed to give the lightweight Nova a “sleeper” performance profile. These cars are rare and highly sought-after by collectors today, often noted for their styling combined with significant performance capabilities.

Key features of the Nova SS L79:

  • Engine: The “L79” is a specific, high-performance version of the 327 cubic-inch small-block V8 engine. It was factory-rated at 350 horsepower and featured higher compression, a performance camshaft, and a 4-barrel Holley carburetor.
  • Performance: Capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds, a performance level comparable to some larger muscle cars of the era.
  • Handling: Came with heavy-duty springs and shocks to improve agility.
  • Appearance: Maintained an understated and “sleeper” look with minimal badging, making it a subtle yet fast car.
  • Rarity: Only about 5,481 L79-equipped Novas were built, making them a rare and collectible classic car today. Only 5 or 6 were ever produced in 1967! The “SS” designation denotes the Super Sport trim, which was the performance-oriented package.

This combination made this ’67 a fast and underrated car that could outperform larger muscle cars of its era.

Nova SS L79 Performance:

  • Its lightweight body, combined with the powerful engine, gave it a remarkable power-to-weight ratio and quick acceleration. An absolute blast to drive!
  • Appearance: The “SS” (Super Sport) trim included sporty features like bucket seats, a center console, and special badging, but from the outside, it was often disguised as an unassuming car, earning it the “sleeper” title.
  • Collectible: Because many were raced and subsequently destroyed, surviving examples are now rare and highly collectible.
